Appearing to be still present.
Still under 1.5.22, because this bug came just after.

You said it worked in 1.7.1 (comment 3). Testing with 1.5.22 makes no sense.

This bug appear randomly, but in really rare case it works.

On 1.6+ it doesn't work at all. Maybe with 1.7.1 it back randomly, and I was lucky when I tried. Also I didn't tested more, because I simply can't save most of my files (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33873).

With 1.5.22, I'm sure to :

- Launch it
- Save files

That's why I actually can't upgrade wine. Btw 1.5.22 is running pretty well.

Can you please run a regression test? http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

This will greatly improve the chance this bug gets fixed quickly.
Comment 11 artik 2013-12-03 10:31:34 UTC
Frédéric, I tried again with Playonlinux. POL is really cool because I can try many Wine versions. So today, this bug's back.

Photoshop doesn't launch on most wine version since I upgraded my linux mint in version 16. Maybe it's a kernel problem ? So now i tried :

1.6.1 : freeze on "initiliazing tools ..."

1.7.0 : works
1.7.1 : works
1.7.2 : works

1.7.3 : freeze on "initiliazing tools ..."
1.7.4 : freeze on "initiliazing tools ..."
1.7.5 : freeze on "initiliazing tools ..."
1.7.6 : freeze on "initiliazing tools ..."
1.7.7 : freeze on "initiliazing tools ..."

Maybe a diff between 1.7.2 and 1.7.3 will localise the bug.
Hope this could help.

You really should try with plain wine. PoL is not supported here since it changes things from vanilla Wine, and we can't support that.
For instance, wine 1.7.0 seemed to fail for you (if I see the bug "Version" field) while it apparently works with PoL 1.7.1

So, the best you could do would be to perform a regression test (http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting) since I can't reproduce the bug.
Otherwise it'll be very hard to fix...
Comment 13 artik 2013-12-03 13:20:35 UTC
Ok, maybe you can drive me. With POL I finally found 2 version of wine that works (1.7.1). After targeting the same release, I tried in plain Wine (1.7.1) and I'm facing same issue : initializing tools.

I'm totally lost, I tried updating the kernel but it doesn't change anything. The only solution for me is to back to the older version of Mint (15) and wine 1.5.22.

Performing a regression test works if an older version of Wine works, but in the actual context (mint 16 and plain wine) no one is working.

What can I do to help you ? Ready to spend my night on this bug.

I'm not quite sure why you insist on using PoL:
it is ***NOT*** supported ***AT ALL*** here

Also, first test by reinstalling the app in a new wineprefix (cf. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#wineprefix).

log timeout POL wine 1.5.28

Ok, I try now. In the meantime, I get with a log an interesting thing. For the fist time, Photoshop had booted after 6 minutes blocking on initialising tools. I catched the log (when "initializing tools" has been unlocked, lines after "fixme:wia:wiadevmgr_QueryInterface interface {00000003-0000-0000-c000-000000000046} not implemented......." started. Maybe a good way !

If you insist on using PoL, then I can't help you. We don't support any third-party app using wine here.

I already gave suggestions in comment 14, using plain wine.
You can also ask on PoL forums.

I tried POL 2 hours but I always used plain Wine. While I perform a regression test, Wine can give me a log to get more infos on what's happen ?

Wine is made of small incremental changes, sometimes these changes break things. This is called a regression. The regression test will find the change that broke it for you.

Bug still present on 1.3.11 for exemple

It will be hard for me to have an exit. I tried the regression test, but since I moved to the new Linuxmint, this "initializing tools.." freeze bug is now present for all wine releases.

I perform a regression test, to wine 1.1, no one can boot Photoshop CS2, I strictly have any idea were that could be comes from, I tried updating my kernel, etc.

Well, I back to an older Mint (15) to get at least version 1.5.22 working.

You should probably file a bug with your distribution for that.
Comment 25 artik 2013-12-05 06:41:12 UTC
Well, after contacting the Cinnamon team over their Github, It seems bug comes from Wine.

Something strange is now, it still fails, even on older Mint released. My actual workaround is using lastest Mint 16 with lastest Wine 1.7.7 and the brush patch, on Photoshop CS6.

Actually, I can't perfom a regression test, because I can't find a wine version that can launch Photoshop CS2 (the last version that have pressure sensitive working on Wacom).

I'm actually feeling a little bit lost, after two days trying to find the reason of this bug. Maybe an update in the compilation tools ? Also if a wine can give me a log for "why it crash, or failed to initializing tools", how can I proceed ?
Comment 27 unxed 2013-12-06 06:11:32 UTC
CS2 works for me with Wine 1.4.1 (using MINT 15, MATE edition).
Comment 28 artik 2013-12-06 06:45:02 UTC
@unxed : Maybe you can't, but could you try on a fresh cinnamon 15 to try ? BTW, Cinnamon / MATE, this bug is present since 1.6 you told me.
Comment 29 markus 2013-12-27 11:41:33 UTC
I can confirm this behaviour in 1.7.9 on Ubuntu 64-bit. Photoshop CS2 worked around 1.6-ish.

Compiling 32-bit wine on a 64-bit system seems currently not to work (at least for me):
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1942266

After setting up a lxc container and installing gigabytes of packages config works with $ CC="ccache gcc -m32" ./configure --verbose --disable-test --without-pthread --without-freetype
(pthread apparently died some time ago; can't find the neccessary freetype libs) but make fails.

$ sudo apt-get build-dep wine1.7
seems to need some source-URIs - I don't know a way to find which ones.

In unrelated news: Gimphoto is not a alternative. Have to use Win 7 for now :(
Comment 30 unxed 2014-01-22 07:55:00 UTC
Can not reproduce this bug with wine 1.7.11 (I use it via PlayOnLinux).
Tested on Linux Mint 15 MATE x32 and Linux Mint 16 MATE x64.
Using x32 wine builds in both cases.

So can anyone please retest this issue via natively built wine 1.7.11 without any wrappers?
Comment 31 unxed 2014-01-22 08:08:56 UTC
I've tried different wine versions the same way. This bug is not reproduced in PlayOnLinux on any wine version I've tried. So I guess it is some kind of configuration or environment-dependent bug.

Tried the following wine versions (x32):
1.7.9
1.7.11
1.6.2
1.4.1
1.3.4

This bug is not reproduced in ANY of them then running CS2 via PlayOnLinux.

Linux Mint 15 MATE x32.

PS: But this bug is still reproduced on vanilla wine 1.4.1 installed in my system by default.
Comment 32 unxed 2014-01-22 08:13:47 UTC
"PS: But this bug is still reproduced on vanilla wine 1.4.1 installed in my system by default." - this was written by a mistake. The bug is actually reproduced with 1.6.1 from wine ppa, not in 1.4.1!
Comment 33 unxed 2014-01-22 08:17:59 UTC
Bug is also not reproducing in wine 1.6.1 from POL.
Are they using some custom patches over vanilla wine?
Comment 34 Frédéric Delanoy 2014-01-22 08:42:52 UTC

I've noted POL only to show that this bug *MAY BE* environtment-specific, but not a core wine bug. Sorry if it is irrelevant here.
Comment 36 Ken Sharp 2014-02-04 15:30:44 UTC
Ran in a loop for an hour with wine-1.7.11-206-g82b3813 and it works fine.

for i in {1..60} ; do time wine-git ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Adobe/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CS2/Photoshop.exe & (sleep 60 ; wmctrl -c "Adobe Activation") ; done

Marking fixed.
Comment 37 Adam 2014-02-06 14:18:18 UTC
I'm actually having this same issue on wine-1.7.11 and PS CS2 downloaded from Adobe.

Terminal output is attached as terminal_output_mygeeknc.txt.

I've tried what's been suggested but nothing seems to have an affect. This is a vanilla install of Wine from the Ubuntu ppa repo's on Xubuntu 13.10.

But this is the right bug?

Photoshop failed to load at "initializing tools" window. Disabling twain_32.dll fixes it.

I am going to search if Markus ever created a new bug on this. if not I will go ahead and open one.

No, I did not open a new bug. I'm still under the impression it's this one.

But please go ahead, would be great when PS CS2 would start working again :)
