Description Béla Gyebrószki 2012-01-14 07:37:25 CST
Starting a new game in Ski Challenge 2010 demo takes an unusually long time: 5-7 minutes.
Lowering the screen resolution/detail level, disabling audio don't make a difference.
Besides the default Windows XP mode, I tried with Win2000, Vista as well as Windows 7 mode: all the same.

What does seem to improve the loading time considerably is to set the Windows version to Win98 in winecfg: loading a new game takes only 15-30 seconds (depending on the detail level).

Steps to reproduce the problem with the demo:
1. Install the demo. Select 'Use custom installation' option and uncheck the option 'Run Ski Challenge 2010 (FTV)'.
2. Start the demo by Updater.exe. The updater will fail, dismiss the error message. The launcher should appear.
3. In the launcher go to <Options> --> <Manual> then click on <Accept>. Click on <Play>.
4. When the main menu appears click on <Play> --> <Training>, select a course and click on <Play>.
5. The game is loading but it seems to take forever to get into the game.

Terminal output doesn't reveal anything suspicious, just lots of

Yes, it is the same game demo. Btw. the problem is still present for me in 1.7.18.

I just tried the demo too and I can confirm that the problem exists.

Weird issue.

The most loading time seems to take when it somehow examines your pc. On the second run when I set windows98 using same prefix that part was skipped (?).

After pressing play button, it felt like the speed was the same. No measurements were used. In general it would be nice to see some improvement in loading speed.

This is no longer an issue in recent (3.x) Wine. The game is loading to the menu in a matter of seconds.
For comparison, I tried the game in Wine 2.0.5 and the problem is obviously there: it takes several minutes to load the game.

Marking fixed.
