Description Matt Morse 2008-11-19 10:29:30 UTC
Word 2003 in Wine doesn't show bold or face type properly when using Times New Roman font. It just shows it like regular type but with the 'bold' toolbar button depressed on the formatting toolbar. When I switched my document to Arial Narrow font this problem seemed to disappear. It may just be an issue with this font only. It could also be my video card playing tricks on me as well but I'm not sure. Here are my hardware and software specs:

OS: Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
Wine version 1.1.8
Hardware: HP Pavilion dv600t laptop, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 graphics card, Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 1.8ghz cpu, Intel 845GM chipset

Bold works fine for me in Word 2003 for Times New Roman and all other fonts. Wine 1.1.8, openSUSE 10.3.

Is this still an issue in current (1.1.22 or newer) wine?

Yes this still happens in wine 1.1.22, using Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit, but not for the times new roman font, it happens with other fonts, like century, alHor, AlBattar, Vivaldi, etc.

I'm seeing it now too in 1.1.22 for some fonts.

Based on the dozen or so fonts I checked, it seems to affect only fonts that don't have a separate file for the bold version. In Windows, Office apps can still bold these fonts.

This also affects Word 2007, Powerpoint 2003 & 2007, and Excel 2003 & 2007.

+font trace, selecting Century and bold

I'm uploading a +font trace from starting Word 2003, selecting Century from the font list, selecting bold, and typing a few words. (Century is one of the fonts Office 2003 installs itself.)

Since bold was working for me when this bug was first filed, I tried running a regression test back to 1.1.7, but the bisects all came up bad. I'm now using openSUSE 11.1, with freetype2 2.3.7, so I can't reproduce the same conditions.

The problem with bold is not limited to the way the affected fonts display onscreen; printed documents do not show the bolding, either. However, when I saved a document in Word 2003 and then opened it in native Open Office, the font did correctly display as bold.

I also tested Abiword for Windows, and found that it has the same problem.

Still present in 1.1.36.
Comment 9 leighman 2010-02-01 11:40:26 UTC
I too have noticed this in Word 2007.
I noticed it when using the font Doulos SIL (installed from Ubuntu repos). Haven't checked with other fonts.
Ubuntu 9.10, Wine 1.1.37.

Century now does bold properly in 1.3.8, but there are other fonts that still don't. Deja Vu Sans is one that doesn't display or print bold in Word 2003/2007, though if I save the file and open it in native Open Office, the bolding is there.

Still an issue in 1.4-rc2.
Comment 12 Ronak 2013-01-02 09:50:26 UTC
Seems to work fine as of 1.5.20. Confirm?

No.

I tested several fonts that are installed by Office 2007 itself: Algerian, Baskerville Old Face, Brushscript MT, Century, Gigi, Harrington, and Informal Roman. The do not display or print as bold when running in Wine, but do when the same document is opened in Word 2007 running in XP under VMPlayer on the same machine.

Attaching a file with side-by-side screenshots of the same document in Word 2007 in Wine and in Windows XP.

Could you test again with wine 1.7.5 or later?
As of 1.7.5, we have improved support for simulated bold fonts.
Comment 16 Rosanne DiMesio 2013-11-11 07:50:37 UTC
I retested all the fonts mentioned in comment 13, and bolding works for all of them. Tested in 1.7.6.

Marking fixed.
Comment 17 Alexandre Julliard 2013-11-22 12:50:34 UTC
Closing bugs fixed in 1.7.7.
