Description Wyatt Epp 2007-11-11 06:53:47 UTC
In games by Team Shanghai Alice, character dialogue and other text is supposed to have a transparent background but it is rendered in Wine as a black background.

Comparison in Shoot the Bullet

The left is how this should appear. The right is how it does appear.
Comment 2 Wyatt Epp 2007-11-11 09:31:50 UTC
Another instance not involving text can be seen in Touhou Bunkachou ~ Shoot the
Bullet, where camera images are not shown during play and on the high-scores
screen.
Comment 3 Jeremy Chin 2007-11-18 19:40:11 UTC
The Shoot The Bullet bug is seperate. See the comment at http://www.pooshlmer.com/touhouwiki/index.php/Talk:Running_in_Linux - The photos are written to a scratch texture, which wine doesn't allow.

Image showing the problem

Image that shows the black background under the text, which should be transparent.

Is this still an issue in current (1.0-rc5 or newer) wine?

Ahh, thanks. I'll mark that obsolete. Please upload your terminal output in a clean .wine and wine 1.0-rc5.

The non-transparent areas are still there when I run Perfect Cherry Blossom in 1.1.15.

Attached a terminal log from running the game.

DIB engine patch and export WINEDIB=ON do not help at all on Touhou 10.

The text of all games (Touhou 6 to 12) Works fine here when using the DIB engine. Is it only Touhou 10 that gives you the problem? Does the older games work fine?
Comment 23 Eric Appleman 2009-06-09 21:46:11 UTC
Touhou 6, 7, and 8 are fixed by the patch. Touhou 10 dialog is still mostly unreadable.

Touhou 11 and 12 can't run above 10fps in Wine on my hardware even with the proper DLL files. It's a separate bug. >_<

th07 - Perfect Cherry Blossom with winex11 patch applied

Roderick Colenbrander posted a patch on wine-devel, intended to fix alpha handling:

http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2009-July/077500.html

That patch changes the apperance on Touhou games 6-9. Later games are unaffected by the change.

Differences:

Black rectangles now only appear directly behind text, making the black rectangles smaller when the patch is applied. Text background is still black. This is a step in the right direction.

Text get colored for some reason when the patch is applied. This is less good as the text is white both in unpatched Wine and in Windows.
Comment 25 Roderick Colenbrander 2009-10-01 13:39:55 UTC
As of todays GIT, this bug should be over. I haven't been able to test it due to some input issues in the game in recent Wine version but in theory it should all work fine now.

Comparison of th07 in wine-git and Win XP

(In reply to comment #25)
> As of todays GIT, this bug should be over.

Sorry, not totally fixed. It looks a lot better now, but there are still black boxes underneath a lot of the text in the game. What the patch did is that it restricted the black boxes to areas directly underneath text, thus making them smaller.

See picture for current difference of the look in wine-1.1.30-287-g3c98992 and Windows XP.
Comment 27 saunders.52 2009-11-14 17:44:52 UTC
Appears to be fixed on 1.1.32 for me with default settings in Imperishable night and Shoot the Bullet
Comment 28 Roderick Colenbrander 2009-11-15 03:48:59 UTC
I just tried the th07 game again. I still see the black bars around the text but I don't think the bug is in the xrender code anymore. The game seems to be using d3d8, so I wouldn't be surprised if the bug is somewhere there now.
Comment 29 staetrud 2009-12-23 12:14:03 UTC
Works for me in th07 with 1.1.35. Anyone still seeing the black rectangles with that game?

Have tested th07 and th08 in wine 1.1.35. Both look perfect now. Still remaining readability issues in later games are covered by bug 15146 .

This bug is fixed as far as I can tell.
Comment 31 Austin English 2009-12-31 07:00:09 UTC
Reported fixed, twice.

Closing bugs fixed in 1.1.36.
Comment 33 Eric Appleman 2010-01-10 02:22:31 UTC
I don't appreciate this bug being repeatedly closed when we are still no closer to having it actually being fixed for Touhou 10 and later, the versions that this bug affects most widely.

The text is still barely visible and should not be transparent. The DIB work hasn't addressed this either.

See comment #30 it says remaining readability issues in later games are covered by bug 15146 which is titled "Touhou 10, 11 dialogue text transparent, difficult to read"
